The variety of pigments that were used throughout history and those that are now available is completely different. When tattoos first came into existence, there were only pigments that could be found in nature and now any color can be created by mixing pigments together.
A wide range of dyes and pigments can be used in tattoos, from inorganic materials like titanium dioxide and iron oxides to carbon black, azo dyes, and acridine, quinoline, phthalocyanine and naphthol derivates, dyes made from ash, and other mixtures. The current trend for tattoo pigment favors Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS plastic) as seen by the widespread popularity of Intenze, Millenium and other ABS pigmented brands.
